Contractor Safety Initiative Report
Charles J. Kelly, Edison Electric Institute
A update on the EEI Contract Safety Initiative The report includes the adopted Project “White Paper” or Scope document; Safety & Health Excellence Principles, Model Contractor Safety Program Guidelines; and Process Flow Charts for both the Host Company and Contractor. The overall objective of the initiative is to assist in defining and aligning the industry’s expectations when it comes to contractor safety management. This effort is expected to help bridge the gap between utility safety expectations and contractor culture as well as creating a better understanding of the expectation by both the contractor and utility on the roles of both.

Gameplan for Aging – Your Four Quarters of Life
Mark Everest (Occupational Athletics, Inc).

The Gameplan for Aging, Your Four Quarters of Life is an educational and motivational behavior modification Training Seminar that utilizes a sports analogy for aging and LIVING by walking you through your Four Quarters of Life. This meaningful reality check gives participants the knowledge and motivation to make a plan of action for themselves that will benefit their personal well-being and safety as well as the company's bottom line.
Our American workers are aging, and with that simple fact comes additional risk. This seminar will demonstrate that the lifestyle that we lead connects directly to our personal safety. All participants will relate to this straightforward message that will take health and safety from "good" to "world class". This seminar has already touched hundreds of thousands of lives in a positive direction.

DTE Presentation
Deborah Majeski (DTE Energy Co)
DTE Energy relies heavily on the use of specialized trucks, service vans and passenger vehicles to provide reliable delivery of power to its customers. Government statistics show that motor vehicle accidents are a significant contributor to OSHA recordable injuries across our industry and these figures are borne out in DTE Energy’s workforce. DTE Energy has created a Fleet Safety Initiative that will position our organization as an industry leader in the effort to reduce the incidence of motor-vehicle related accidents through a comprehensive program of risk assessment and training. This program will provide web-based training to approximately 5,000 employees. Each employee affected by the initiative will participate in at least two 15 – 20 minute courses annually and may participate in additional training based on driving incidents. Employees who are identified as high risk may also participate in instructor-led training that includes on-the-road exercises and individual performance feedback. Through the Fleet Safety Initiative, DTE Energy expects to realize a significant reduction in motor-vehicle related OSHA recordable injuries and the costs associated with health care, property damage and litigation.

E. On U.S. Presentation
Doug Mullins (E.ON U.S. LLC)
EON-US, Energy Delivery serves 1.1 million customers in Kentucky and Virginia. Our fleet consists of aerial lifts, digger derricks, vans, service body vehicles, pickup trucks and utility vehicles. Our vehicles traveled more than 13 million miles last year. After seeing a rise in the number of incidents we began a 3 year rotation training for all drivers in ED using the National Safety Council's Coaching the Utility Driver program. Drivers involved in an at fault MV incident or who have demonstrated through observation a need for retraining are being sent through the Smith Defensive Driving class. We have a recognition program of the higher risk period for our incident experience called the 90 day stretch. During this time we send daily updates and tips to each operational group to share.

Industrial Hygiene

IAQ/ Mold Issues
Andrew P. Crause, CIH, (Bureau Veritas North America, Inc.)
The session will consist of an overview of office indoor environmental quality (IEQ) issues and how to properly perform a meaningful evaluation of IEQ. We will discuss when and how sampling should be performed, if at all, and review the current thinking in the industrial hygiene community regarding mold and sampling for mold.

Job Exposure Matrix for the Electric Utilities
Eric Brown, CIH, MPH (Southern California Edison Co.)
Utilizing years of Industrial Hygiene, Health Physics, and Environmental data, a job exposure matrix has been created to help evaluate job/task-based risks. This exposure matrix assigns a classification per each possible IH risk. This matrix will assist in organizing and highlighting tasks and jobs that may require the most oversight and/or monitoring, and lets management understand risk in an understandable format. The future goal of this matrix is to be able to incorporate other companies data, and perhaps include regulatory/liability issues as well.

Public Safety – A Legal Perspective
Michael L. Snyder (McDonald Hopkins LLC)
Almost every lawsuit charges that the utility failed to warn. Your public safety program should be closely scrutinized to ensure that your utility is pro-actively communicating with your community audience and that the messages being shared are appropriate. This presentation will examine legal issues that should be taken into consideration as part of your utility’s public safety outreach.

Minority Communications
Dawn Hanson (The Fairmount Group)
A fundamental question in any outreach effort is, “what is the best way to reach my audience?” It is important to carefully consider the strategies and tools you are using to communicate public safety to the general public which includes ethnic media and minority considerations. This presentation will share best practices in reaching specific populations within your community.
